Jurriaan got his BSc and MSc in Earth Sciences from the University of Amsterdam. After a not-so-short foray into parameter optimization of hydrologic models, Jurriaan started working for the Netherlands eScience Center where he worked on a variety of topics, ranging from parallelization of optimization algorithms on a cluster computer, to extracting estimates of bird migration densities from weather radar data. Lately, he has been involved with the development of a content management system specifically tailored to software. This system, called the Research Software Directory, aims to promote the findability and citability of research software. The system is used in production by the Netherlands eScience Center and others. Furthermore, Jurriaan is the author of the Netherlands eScience Center Software Sustainability Protocol, a document that aims to improve sustainability of software as developed in the projects that the Netherlands eScience Center is involved with.
